Koh Samui · Area Guide

Choeng Mon

A crescent bay of calm water, boutique resorts and some of Samui's best luxury villas.

The Character

Quiet and refined. Choeng Mon is where five-star brands (Tongsai, Melia, Sala) have clustered — and the surrounding hills hold some of the island's most architecturally serious private villas. Low-rise, low-density, low drama.

The Beach

A shallow crescent with a tiny tree-covered island (Koh Fan Noi) you can walk to at low tide. Arguably the best swimming beach on Samui.

Where People Eat

Dining On The Rocks at Six Senses, Tongsai Bay's Chef's Table, Honey Restaurant, The Rock Bar, BBQ nights at most boutique hotels.

Who Choeng Mon Suits Best

Honeymooners, families who want calm water, groups willing to pay for design, and owners chasing top-decile ADR with lower turnover.

Rental Outlook for Owners

Premium ADR. Sea-view 4-bed villas hit THB 40,000–80,000/night in peak.

Why Buy Here

Supply is hard-capped by topography and existing resort footprints — which protects rental rates.

Nearby

Samui Airport (7 min), Fisherman's Village (10 min), Big Buddha (8 min).

Practical Guide

The bay faces north. This is the geographical reason Choeng Mon is the best family beach on Samui: it sits inside a sheltered horseshoe with Koh Som and Koh Fan blocking swell from the open gulf. The water is shallow for ten or twelve metres out — toddlers can wade safely, and the sand is soft enough to walk barefoot. Real palm shade rather than cabana umbrellas.

Seasonality. Peak runs December through April — Choeng Mon doesn't get the southwest monsoon swell that affects west-coast beaches in summer, so it holds up well in May, June, and July when other parts of Samui are choppy. October and November are the only genuinely wet weeks, and even those tend to be afternoon storms rather than washouts.

Drive times. Bo Phut / Fisherman's Village 7 minutes. Samui Airport 5 minutes (the airport is the closest of any beach area on the island, but flight noise is mostly absent because the runway points east and aircraft climb out over the water). Chaweng centre 12 minutes. Big Buddha 5 minutes.

Day-to-day amenities. Nearest large supermarket: Big C Bo Phut (8 minutes) or Tops Choeng Mon (3 minutes for the smaller shop). Nearest A&E: Bangkok Hospital Samui (12 minutes) or Samui International Hospital in Bo Phut (10 minutes). Nearest international school: Panyadee British (12 minutes). The W Hotel and Sala Samui anchor the headland — both have well-regarded restaurants worth booking once during a stay.

For owners. Choeng Mon is the most family-skewed rental market on the island. Listings with two or three bedrooms, true beach access, and a kid-friendly pool fence run 60%+ occupancy and command year-round demand from European and Australian families. ADR for a well-positioned 3-bed villa is 18,000–28,000 THB/night in peak. Plot availability close to the beach is now extremely tight — most acquisitions in 2025–2026 have been off-market deals.

Common guest questions. No, you don't strictly need a car here — Bo Phut and the airport are five-minute taxi rides and Choeng Mon village has enough restaurants for a relaxed week. Most families do still rent a car for day trips, but it's the one beach area where a no-car holiday actually works.
