When to Visit Koh Samui
An honest month-by-month guide to weather, crowds and villa pricing on Koh Samui — so you can match your trip to what you actually want. Written by people who live here.
Short version. Koh Samui's climate runs on a different clock from the rest of Thailand. The east coast — where most villas sit — has its main rainy window in October and November, not the southwest monsoon months you might expect. February through April is a long, reliably dry stretch. Choose your month for the experience, not just the weather.
January — Postcard weather, peak prices
Low humidity, sea-temperature swims, light breezes. Everything is open, every beach club is busy, and villa rates sit 40–60% above annual average. If you want perfect weather and don't mind sharing it, January is the safest month of the year. Book 4–6 months ahead.
February — The quiet sweet spot
Weather is almost identical to January — arguably slightly better, with even lower humidity — but the New Year wave has passed and prices drop noticeably. Our personal favourite month for a villa stay. Chinese New Year bumps a single week, then it calms again.
March — Long, warm, dry
Daytime highs around 32°C, sea flat and clear, dive conditions excellent around Koh Tao. Great for families with young children — no surprises weather-wise. Rates stay reasonable through the month.
April — Songkran and the shoulder tips
Thailand's traditional New Year (13–15 April) is a joyful country-wide water festival. Samui is festive but less intense than Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Weather starts to get hotter and more humid as the month progresses. Villa rates are moderate outside Songkran week.
May — Hot, green, excellent value
Temperatures climb into the mid-thirties. Short afternoon showers begin but rarely disrupt beach days. Jungle is at its most lush. Villa rates are near their lowest — a great month for honeymooners and couples who don't need guaranteed sun every hour.
June — Best kept secret
Weather is better than May's reputation suggests. Mornings are often glorious; the odd afternoon storm rolls through and clears. Dive and snorkel visibility is good. Prices remain friendly. We often recommend June to second-time visitors who want the island at half-speed.
July — European summer wave
Demand climbs sharply as European school holidays start. Weather is generally dry and stable on the east coast — worth remembering that Samui is the opposite of Phuket this time of year. Villa rates push toward high-season territory.
August — High season round two
Busy, sunny, and priced accordingly. The island has a lively summer-holiday feel. Seas are sometimes choppy on the north coast; boat trips to Koh Nang Yuan may be cancelled on windier days.
September — The best shoulder month
Crowds thin dramatically. Weather is usually good — a handful of thundery afternoons, but long sunny windows. Rates fall 30–50% from August. If you can travel without school-age children, September delivers the best value-to-experience ratio of the year.
October — Enter the monsoon
The start of the wet season on the east coast. Rain arrives in heavy, punchy bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Some days are genuinely rough; others are picture-perfect. Prices are at their lowest. Best for guests who care about indoor-outdoor villa living, spa, and cooking classes rather than flawless beach days.
November — The one month we suggest skipping
Peak monsoon. Expect multiple consecutive wet days, choppy seas, occasional flooding in low-lying areas, and some boat-trip cancellations. The upside: the cheapest rates of the year and nearly empty restaurants. We only recommend November for repeat visitors who specifically love the quiet, green, moody side of the island.
December — The weather turns, then comes the rush
The first half of December is often still damp, but from about the 15th the weather switches to dry, sunny and glorious — just in time for Christmas and New Year. Christmas and New Year weeks are the island's busiest and most expensive; every restaurant needs reservations. Book by August.
